A recognised teaching certificate

The distance learning preparatory pack

1. The preparatory course will contain the following textbooks: "Techniques and Principles in Language Teaching" by Diane Larsen-Freeman "English Grammar in Use" by Raymond Murphy "An Einleitung to the Phonology of English" by Ray Parker and Tim Graham.
2. You will receive a set of study guides and worksheets to complete and return to the college.
3. You will also be asked to write an essay of 400-600 words based on your reading of the Larsen-Freeman book. The titles of the book can be found at the end of the relevant worksheet.

The four week intensive training course

1. Unterrichtsmethoden, Language Awareness and Phonetics
   This is the theoretical part of the course, taught in a series of daily lectures and seminars.
2. Learning a New Foreign Language (L2)
   It is essential that trainees gain an insight into the difficulties of learning a foreign language from the learner's viewpoint. This part of the course introduces an unfamiliar language as well as a variety of teaching methodologies. Trainees are requires to keep a journal in which the record their learning experiences.
3. Individual Student Profile
   Each trainee will be assigned a foreign student of English to assess. The aim is to discover through an in-depth analysis, the various factors, such as mother tongue and/or cultural background.
4. Observed Teaching Practice
   Trainees progress from peer teaching to teaching small classes of foreign students. The lesson preparation is discussed with tutors, who also observe and assess the lessons. Trainees are also required to record their own self-assessments of each lesson, in terms of:

   - Achievement of lesson objectives.
   - Lesson content.
   - Use of material/teaching aids.

The four-week course is designed for a maximum of 12 participants. Classes include, lectures, seminars, tutorials, observed lessons and teaching practice.

Job Prospects in TESOL

There is no doubt that English Language Teaching is a growth area, which holds out the prospect of interesting employment, especially for the person who is willing to travel. The certificate course, which offers a marketable skill at the cost of four weeks intensive study, is becoming increasingly popular. However, employers often look for other qualifications as well and a degree or some relevant teaching experience, together with a certificate should make it easier to obtain a TESOL post.

Many of our trainees have been offered posts at St. Brelade's College. We have also helped teachers find employment in many other countries of the world.

We run two courses a year. For jobs in Jersey, May is the best time. For jobs abroad, the best time is September.
